Timeline of Photographic History

1839

The Image capture process is then introduced to the public by Sir John Herschel in a lecture to the Royal Society. He is credited with naming the process "Photography" to the public, even though a few before him used it. The term "photography" is derived from two Greek words meaning "light” (phos) and "writing" (graphien).
