Hi!

My father has a 1905 Century Grand Cirkut panoramic camera outfit up for auction on ebay. The starting bid is $2,500, which is much less than its actual value.

Thanks!

While Cirkut outfits are highly desirable, it's important to understand that ebay is an auction medium, which means that bidding is competitive. If you have ever attended a real life auction, you know that bidding starts low and competition brings the price. No competent auctioneer expects to start the bidding at full retail. Ebay is rarely any different. Few items started at their maximum retail value (which is where this is) will receive a bid of any kind. Once in awhile something does. But most buyers enter into auction bidding in hope of a bargain (which this is not), and only competitive interest carries the price up. It's not impossible that this camera will sell. But neither is it likely. Good luck anyway.

Hi Randy,

Nice looking camera and outfit, but i think the price is high. The century grand camera is a few hundred, with the cirkut type back attachment and all the equipment it is very desirable and considerable more if it is an original matched set, but I don't know how much more. Aren't the official cirkut camera models numbered? I am not an expert on cirkut cameras and McKowens does not list the century grand as a cirkut camera, rather most of the cirkut cameras were RB cycle graphic cameras. Why is the attachment on the back different leather than the camera? Maybe it is not selling quickly, because of identification. but I'm sure there is someone out there interested in it for the right price. good luck.

Tom

Not sure what kind of sources are suggesting that your price is below its real value, but they are inaccurate. I did some more checking. McKeown's latest lists the No. 8 Cirkut in the $1200-1800 range. Those are real world prices. Yours is a nice outfit, but at roughly a thousand dollars over the norm it will take a highly motivated buyer to be willing to shell out for it. Perhaps someone has misinformed you that your outfit is a No. 10 Cirkut, which would indeed bring something more than $2500 (McKeown's: $2800-4000). But that identification would be incorrect. Ebay is also rarely a full market value medium. It is not always accurately predictable, but I would estimate a potential there of $1000-1500. In any event, best of luck with it.

Randy, when you say Panoramic camera, that term is misleading. I consider the rig shown to be a view camera, possibly 8x10" format. "Panoramic" brings to mind a horizontal application where the result is much longer, left to right, than it is high. The most modern example of this is found in APS (advanced photo system) cameras.

No, that's incorrect. The camera shown is definitely a Cirkut camera, full 360 degree panoramic camera. The body is in fact a view camera, but the motor driven back pulls film past a narrow slit while turning the camera on the geared tripod base. 360, 720 degrees, whatever you want. Surprise you aren't familiar with these. Quite famous outfits, and sought after as much by users as collectors, which explains in part the very high prices they bring.

BTW, APS is not a true panoramic system. It's merely a printing gimmick which cuts off the top and bottom of the negative to make a slightly wide angle view look like a panoramic view by making it narrow.

Just looked at his posted photo again. In all fairness, the photo shown is not complete. The outfit as posted on ebay showed the Cirkut back, while this one doesn't, so the error is understandable. We knew that; Glen would not have unless he went to view the complete set of auction images.

Hi Randy,

Would you like to post your camera and outfit in our classified ads section, its free to members, and trial membership is currently free too right now. (may change in future). Our classifieds are getting pretty good traffic since christmas, not as good as ebay but its free and you can post for as long as you want. I'm mixed on advertising for ebay sales, when our members have items for sale in our classified section. I'm sure you would understand that I want to help my members, not become an advertising medium for ebay. I also prefer fair informed transactions and this message board is a good place to sort out what you have and fair value. If you are not interested in joining the club, I will gladly just set you up to access the classified ads for posting photography only related items.

Regards,
Tom
