Hit or Hit-type cameras were originally produced in Japan after WWII to fill a need for a low cost, low material usage camera. Hit-type cameras are regarded as a group of cameras that take 14mm exposures and share a similar design and form factor with minor variations between them, most notably each has a different faceplate. It is based on the most popular successful one called the Hit camera manufactured by the Tougodo company located in Toyohashi, Japan. The Hit name became synonymous with this small camera and they are all now all referred to as a Hit or "Hit-type" cameras or sometimes "Spy" Cameras. In Japan, these are called mame kamera, which translates to "bean cameras".

The cameras are constructed of a lightweight type of molded pot metal with a built-in optical viewfinder. They measure approximately 2 1/4" wide by 1 1/2" tall and 1 1/4" deep. The cameras produced 14×14mm exposures on small paper-backed 17.5mm roll film. They feature a built-in optical view finder, a single instantaneous shutter and a fixed focus lens.
