The Montauk Junior Series was manufactured by G. Gennert as an inexpensive, reliable and improved form of the Achromatic Lens Box Camera. Introduced in 1890 with continued production approximately through 1900. Two styles were made in the Junior series. A fixed focus version and a focusing version. The camera was covered in imitation seal material that provided a durable, inexpensive and handsome finish to the camera.
The 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 Montauk Junior is a fixed focus camera that was extremely simple to manipulate. It was always in focus and almost impossible to make an error using it. It covered the whole field of general photography groups, landscapes, marine views, time exposures or instantaneous all are rendered equally well. The image could be viewed in a rear ground glass through the full access door.
The 4x5 pattern contained a focusing device and a focusing scale as this size was too large to give satisfaction as a fixed focus instrument. It can also be focused accurately by inspecting the image found in the rear full sized spring actuated ground glass and door.
The lenses supplied were tested and set for the sharpest possible focus. A set of diaphragms and a time and instantaneous shutter are supplied and add to the optical completeness of the Montauk Junior Series Two square finders are supplied and two tripod plates for taking either upright or horizontal photographs. The Montauk popular detective holders with rubber slide are also incorporated.
In 1899 the 3 x4 Fixed focus cost $5.00 and the 4x5 Changeable focus was $7.00.
