  Balda Werk Camera Listing

On November 20, 1908 Max Baldeweg founded the Balda-Werk of Dresden (Saxony), Germany. Max Baldeweg was a trained master mechanic with an interest in photography. Prior to WWII, the company sold an inexpensive line of small amateur folding cameras with their brand and also sold many cameras to other companies for resale under their own brand, acting as an original equipment manufacturer. In 1913 the name "Balda" was registered as a trademark, and the company changed its name to "Balda-Werk Max Baldeweg".

From 1940 the Balda plant had the daily production interrupted to support the war effort by producing armaments. During the war the factory was damaged by fire bombs. At the end of the war, Max Baldewegtook made efforts to revitalize the company as the sole owner with the help of Willibald Lauterbach as director. Because of allegations against Max Baldeweg and Willibald Lauterbach both had to leave the company and Dresden. The company was then nationalized in East Germany in 1946. Max Baldeweg fled to west Germany to start a new company called Balda (Balda Kamera-Werk) in East Westphalia in Bad Oeynhausen. Then in 1951 the name was changed to Belca-Werk after a trademark litigation issue was contested. The company was absorbed by VEB Kamera-Werke Niedersedlitz in 1956.
