Fowke's Portable camera was manufactured by T. Ottewill & Co. of London in circa 1856. The compact folding camera was designed by Captain Francis Fowke of the Royal Engineers and patented as No. 1295, on 31st May 1856. It was specifically designed for military use and was sold originally to the British government. In 1858 a teak version was produced for use in harsh tropical climates.
