Amatuer Photographer Edward Caner captured this image of the USS Kearsarge in New York Cities East River in 1893 just prior to its last voyage, on a glass plate negative. The Kearsarge was named for Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire. The USS Kearsarge was famous for the Naval victory over the Confederate commerce pirate ship the CSS Alabama during the American civil war. The Kearsarge name has lived on and is carried on a modern Wasp-class amphibious assault ship LHD-3 of the United States Navy.
