American Challenge, version 2

The American Challenge camera was one of the first cameras introduced at the start of the company in circa 1883. Our reference Ad below is one of the first ads placed in the century magazine in 1883 by the Rochester Optical Company, shortly after W. F. Carlton purchased the business from Wm. Walker. The American Challenge camera was one of Rochester Optical Companies flagship dry plate cameras. It was targeted at the new amateur market that arose from the discovery and implementation of the dry plate camera. The camera was advertised as "the most complete camera ever manufactured". HC is calling this model version 2, featuring a standard wood bed. The swivel mount version of the American Challenge is referred to as version 1 which was also available during the transition from the Walker company. Available in 5 x 8 inch size.
