  American Challenge, version 1

The American Challenge camera was made by the Rochester Optical Company (Successors to the Wm. H. Walker & Co.) in circa 1883. The American Challenge is an early model that was not produced for a long time. There were two cameras advertised by the Rochester Optical Company as the American Challenge. This camera with unique lens mounting and unique tripod mounting is referred to as version 1. It is believed that this camera was a carry over from the William Walker company and is quite rare. Advertised as being manufactured in all sizes. A compact, accurate and reliable camera embodying new points or features. Outfits were originally priced from $10.00 and upward.
